Plan IoT device connectivity

An IoT connectivity plan connects devices to the applications that use their data. Plan each device group around its hardware, locations, data use, and operating requirements.

Separate different device groups

A sensor sending small readings, a payment kiosk, and a camera can have very different traffic patterns. Describe each group separately, including quantity, device model, deployment geography, and monthly usage. Avoid applying one group’s requirements to the entire fleet.

Check device and SIM compatibility

  • Exact device or cellular modem model and supported network technologies.
  • Physical SIM or eSIM requirements and the device’s supported provisioning method.
  • Carrier compatibility, certifications, and deployment locations.
  • Whether SMS, private networking, inbound access, or special addressing is required.

Account for all device traffic

Include application traffic, device health checks, firmware updates, retries, and remote support. Use measured usage where available. If you only have an estimate, label it and validate with representative devices before a larger rollout.

Plan activation and support

Consider how devices will be activated, monitored, supported, and retired. Ask about Sentinel management, device sourcing, SIM installation, provisioning, and deployment support. Availability depends on the project.

Example: a mixed fleet

A deployment with environmental sensors and interactive kiosks should retain separate quantities and usage assumptions for each group. Give Advisor the device count and usage estimate for each group so it can compare suitable plans.

Common questions

Can one plan cover every device?

Sometimes, but different usage, hardware, geography, or service requirements may call for separate groups. Share those differences before comparing plans.

Does multi-carrier connectivity mean any device works everywhere?

No. Device compatibility, network availability, SIM capabilities, and supported geography still apply. Validate the exact device and deployment.

Should I choose pooled or per-device data?

Compare both where available using the distribution of usage across your fleet, expected peaks, and applicable plan terms. A fleet average alone can hide high-usage devices.
